Registering and licensing rental properties:

The City Council has added this topic for consideration at a work session in 2016 (February 9.)

In preparation for the work session staff is researching other communities to get an idea for the purpose of their programs, the costs, and if they view the program as successful. To date we have been in contact with:

Boulder, CO
Lawrence, KS
Ames, IA
Iowa City, IA
Provo, UT
Eugene, OR
Cedar Rapids, IA
Tacoma, WA

Staff will be seeking direction from Council on many of your questions (registration vs. licensing, proposed fees, components of a program, etc.) I have heard no mention of rent control.

Prior to the work session staff will reach out to targeted stakeholder groups (CSU, Board of Realtors, NoCoRHA, the Affordable Housing Board) to let them know the work session is scheduled. More involved public outreach will occur after the work session when we have direction and know what a possible program might involve.
