For those who have inquired, thank you for sharing your concern. This incident has raised many questions about the use of force that occurred in connection with the arrest of Ms. Surat. Please know that we take this issue very seriously. Chief Hutto has tasked the department’s Professional Standards Unit to investigate the arrest of Ms. Surat, and to have the Citizen Review Board further review their investigation, so that a clear picture of the events prior to the actual arrest, the arrest itself and the events after Ms. Surat’s arrest are fully documented and evaluated. The City is committed to full transparency in this situation, and once that investigation is complete, all of the body camera videos related to the investigation will be shared. We ask for your patience in this matter as we have a duty to try to limit publicity during the pending investigation and prior to trial in order to protect both the fairness and accuracy of the investigation and Ms. Surat’s right to a fair trial.

Additionally, the arresting officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. It’s important to note that this change in job status is not disciplinary in nature, but is in response to the general climate created by the public response to this incident.
