The Larimer County landfill will close when full, in approximately ten years. Under the solid waste rules set by the State of Colorado no further expansion is allowable at the current location. State regulation is intended to protect public health and the environment and requires all landfills to be lined, but the current site is not lined. It would not be financially feasible to dig up the current site to bring it into compliance and therefore cannot be expand beyond what its existing permit allows. Additionally, while the County owns a half-section parcel of land to the south of the current landfill, it has been found to have shallow groundwater and would not be appropriate for landfilling the region’s waste.

Several feasible options for regional infrastructure have been identified for consideration to help the region meet its future waste-handling needs. There are many, complex considerations in the process of Wasteshed planning for both practice and policy and it is very early in the process. Four forums are being help to gather input and comments can be submitted through the County’s website: www.larimer.org/wasteshed. Additional information and a Regional Wasteshed Planning Study detailing the options under consideration are available a www.fcgov.com/recycling/wasteshed.
